Cameras and data protection on site – a fine line

Construction site documentation has changed radically in recent years. What used to be a „nice-to-have“ for marketing is today a critical tool for evidence, theft protection and project management. But as cameras grow denser, so does the attention of the data protection authority (DSB).

The problem: „I'm only filming the progress“

Many builders are under the misconception that footage showing „only“ the building is unproblematic. The reality is different: as soon as people (workers, passers-by) or vehicle licence plates are recognisable, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) applies in full force. It becomes especially critical when cameras inadvertently capture public areas such as pavements or neighbouring properties. The data protection authority has recently imposed more penalties where controllers fail to cooperate or where surveillance is disproportionate.

The solution: security through technology

Data protection must not be a brake on your documentation. The key lies in the technology. Modern systems offer „privacy by design“. This means that sensitive image areas are never stored in the first place.

• Privacy masks: public areas are permanently blacked out at the image sensor.
• AI blurring: people and vehicles are detected and anonymised within milliseconds.
